On The Campaign Trail

Liberals could pick up five to six seats in Alberta

  • Alberta has long been a stronghold for the federal Conservative Party, the bedrock of the party, but political insiders say Liberal Party’s rapid surge in the polls over the past two months has put at least five of the province’s 37 ridings into play for a potential Mark Carney win in the upcoming election.
  • Potential Liberal wins include the ridings of Calgary McKnight, Calgary Confederation, Calgary Centre, Edmonton Centre, and Edmonton Southeast.
    • Incumbent Liberal MP George Chahal is seeking re-election in Calgary McKnight, while political insider and pundit Corey Hogan is running in Calgary Confederation. Former cabinet minister Amarjeet Sohi is contesting the seat in Edmonton Southeast.
  • One key factor behind the Liberal surge in the polls is the shift of left-leaning voters toward the red party, driven by a healthy desire to block Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre from becoming prime minister. (The Hill Times)

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre defends Aaron Gunn, the North Island-Powell River, BC candidate accused of denying residential schools history

  • Earlier this week, regional chief of the British Columbia Assembly of First Nations Terry Teegee accused Aaron Gunn of making comments that were  reprehensible, especially to residential school survivors.”
  • “He’s not denied the impact of residential schools, that’s just misinformation,” Poilievre told reporters Saturday at a campaign stop in Osoyoos, B.C. “In fact, he has said that he wants to continue to condemn the residential schools and build stronger partnerships with First Nations people to unlock our resources, so that we can produce incredible paycheques and opportunities for First Nations communities right across British Columbia.” (Global News)
