The Polls

Liberals favoured to win majority if election held today

  • Liberals 44.0% / Conservatives 37.8% / NDP 8.7% / BQ 5.1% / Green 2.4% / PPC 1.5%

The Liberals have held a consistent lead of six or seven points in the national polling average since the second week of the campaign and remain favoured to win a majority government if the election were held today. The Conservatives are holding at more support than they’ve had in the last three elections, but it is not high enough to win when the Liberals have picked up so much of the Bloc Québécois and NDP vote. Those two parties are on track for significant seat losses. (CBC Poll Tracker – April 14, 2025)

Beginning in January, Frank Graves started to notice a sudden and unexpected downward trend for Conservatives. At the time, Graves was ridiculed online for his observations, especially because of his reputation as a Liberal supporter strongly opposed to Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre. But as Donald Trump talked more and more about tariffs and annexing Canada, Graves — and the rest of the country — watched as the Conservative Party’s 25-point lead evaporated. Now, Graves predicts a comfortable win for Mark Carney and his fellow Liberals. “This is unprecedented,” Graves said. “I have never seen a transformation of our voter landscape in Canada of that nature.” (Politico)

On The Campaign Trail

The Conservatives’ Last Gambit: Smear Carney

A recent Angus Reid poll found that 55% of respondents had a favourable view of Liberal Leader Mark Carney. By comparison, just 36% favoured Pierre Poilievre. Carney was also preferred as prime minister, 50% to 28%, over the Conservative leader. (The Tyee)

Economy

The April 28 election has higher stakes than any Canadian vote in recent memory. Trump has threatened not only Canada’s economy but its sovereignty, repeatedly taunting it as a future 51st state. The global trade war he started risks plunging Canada into a recession, adding pressures to tax revenues and spurring more spending to help businesses and workers. Both parties have also promised to invest more in defence. Canada, which is rated AAA by S&P Global, would join a global trend of greater borrowing as the US pulls back from long-held economic and security relationships. Germany unlocked hundreds of billions of euros for defense and infrastructure, and other European nations are set to make similar moves. China is expected to unleash fiscal stimulus in response to Trump’s tariffs. (Bloomberg)
