The B.C. Wildfire Service says almost 25,000 square kilometres of trees, bush and grassland have burned this year, almost double previous record, while the cost of fighting fires is now at approximately $770 million, reports the CBC.

In May 2023, 15.9 million Canadians or four in five workers were commuting to a location outside their home for work, up from both 2021 (+3.3 million) and 2016 (+457,000), reports Statistics Canada. 82.6% of commuters (13.2 million people) mainly use a car, truck, or van to travel to work.
“In 2021,1.5 million people in Canada reported being Black, up from 1.2 million five years earlier, and more than 300 different ethnic or cultural origins were reported in the Census of Population,” according to Statistics Canada. “While the education and labour market experiences of Black people in Canada are just as diverse as the Black population, the socioeconomic conditions of this population, including rates of employment and earnings, are generally lower than the non-Indigenous, non-racialized population. This is true even after accounting for differences in age and education.”
These trees will capture and store carbon from the atmosphere, improve air and water quality, help to restore nature and biodiversity, cool our urban centres, and create and support thousands of green jobs.

Vienna has retained its crown as the world’s most liveable city, according to Economist’s annual index.
The 2023 Global Liveability Index quantifies the challenges presented to an individual’s lifestyle and standard of living in 173 cities worldwide. The 2023 Economist Intelligence Unit’s annual ranking has also included three Canadian cities among the worlds top 10 most liveable. Australia and Switzerland each have 2 entries. Denmark, Japan, and New Zealand each had one city in the top rankings.
